The House That Flipped, Literally: Our Review of the Landmark Upside Down House

I bet you didn’t know that Lagos had a literal flip side that needs to be on your bucket list.

Right inside Landmark Lagos is ‘The Upside Down House.’ This fascinating destination is exactly what it sounds like, a house completely flipped on its head, defying gravity and common sense.

But this isn’t just any topsy-turvy attraction thrown together for the ‘gram. There’s a fascinating story behind these inverted walls.

From Afro-Brazilian Heritage to Accidental Icon

The house originally belonged to Akinseye Pedro, a respected Afro-Brazilian businessman from the 19th century, when freed slaves returned to Lagos from Brazil. His grandson Emmanuel, determined to preserve this piece of family and Lagos history, arranged to have the ancestral home relocated to an Afro-Brazilian cultural center.

But here’s where things get interesting: During transport, a freak storm allegedly picked up the house, spun it around, and dropped it perfectly upside down near Landmark. I’m not saying Zeus had a hand in interior decorating that day, but I’m not ruling it out either.

Whether you believe the dramatic storm story or think someone just had a brilliant marketing idea, the result is an attraction that will have you questioning your sense of balance and reality.

What To Expect

As you enter the Upside Down House, prepare for your brain to short-circuit for a moment. Furniture hangs from the “floor” (which is actually the ceiling), light fixtures sprout from below, and doorways require a double-take. It’s like someone took your childhood dream of walking on the ceiling and made it a reality.

You Should Also Know

The Upside Down House is open daily from 10 AM to 8 PM, giving you plenty of time to flip out and each tour lasts about 30 minutes.

A few things to note before you visit:

  • Leave the high heels at home
  • Skip breakfast if you get motion sickness easily
  • Pregnant women should sit this one out (doctor’s orders, not mine)
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled time
  • Book tickets in advance through their website or the Landmark Citizen App

And if you’re wondering, yes, there’s a gift shop where you can buy merchandise that’s surprisingly right-side up.

The Upside down house is fun, it’s weird (in the best way), and it reminds us that even when life flips you over, you can still stand tall. Just upside down.

So if you’re looking to defy gravity (and maybe your ex’s expectations), this is your next stop.
